Dessert for Breakfast
Jersey City
May 17, 2024
Hi there!
What did you have for breakfast? I’m guessing it probably wasn’t steak and eggs! Maybe you had oatmeal or a chia pudding but if you’re like most people you probably had a muffin, a bagel, or a croissant.
Before the 50’s most jobs involved physical labor and people ate hearty breakfasts. It would have been impossible to make it through the day on merely a muffin.
A nutrient dense, protein rich breakfast was the only option to get the energy needed to be productive.
Times have changed and most jobs now are sedentary. We spent lot and lots of time sitting in front of our computers. But that doesn’t mean we get to eat dessert for breakfast!
If you’re in perimenopause or menopause eating protein is essential. And you should eat it for breakfast.
BTW – Protein bars don’t count. They generally have too much sugar. Check the label.
In this stage of life, we need protein to build muscle mass which is decreasing with age, and you need protein to boost your metabolism.
Your progesterone is decreasing which slows your metabolism and causes weight gain. You can counteract weight gain by increasing the amount of protein in your diet.
Ideally you want to boost your metabolism at the start of your day. This is why it’s important to eat protein for breakfast.
If you’re wondering what protein for breakfast looks like, here are some options for you:
· Protein powder in your smoothie
· Chia pudding
· An omelet
· Avocado and egg on toast
· Nut butter and fruit on toast
· Yogurt with granola
· Fruit and nut bowl
Hopefully you’ll think differently about what you eat for breakfast. And make sure you eat breakfast!
If you need help with meal planning, I offer a customized meal plan which includes a consultation plus recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for 7 days. The cost is $150.
Be well,
Laura

· I love food but I’m concerned about what is happening in the food world. There have been lots of documentaries about food in the past couple of years. Most are eye-opening and a bit depressing. I just watched a film that I recommend. It actually made me feel hopeful. Check out this NYT article and then watch the movie. It’s on Prime.
