Bone Loss Begins at 35

Hi there!
I’ve never broken a bone. When I was a kid, I’d often wish for a broken arm or leg not because I really wanted to break a bone but for all the attention that came with it. Everyone wanted to write on your cast. No matter how geeky you were, that broken bone gave you celebrity status. At least for a few days, until the novelty wore off.
Now I wish like hell to never have any broken bones. With age comes wisdom😊.
Broken bones and fractures are the number 1 cause of death in women over 80
One of the symptoms of menopause is bone loss. Depending on the amount of bone loss it will be considered either osteopenia or osteoporosis. Osteopenia is the precursor to osteoporosis. Think of osteopenia as a warning sign.
Bone loss is silent. You don’t know it’s happening until you either fracture a bone or have a bone density scan (DEKA scan). These scans are only recommended for women over 65. You may be thinking that’s pretty late in the game to find out you’re losing bone mass, especially since bone loss starts when you’re in your 30’s! I agree. Take care of your bones now. Your best defense is prevention.
Here’s what you can do to maintain strong healthy bones and avoid bone breaks and fractures:
· Make sure to get enough calcium (1000mg if you’re under 50 and 1200mg if you’re 51 or older)
· Take a vitamin D supplement. This helps your body absorb calcium.
· Eat protein, (either animal or nonanimal sources). Between 60 and 80 grams daily.
· Exercise! Weight baring and resistance training both build bone mass.
· Do not smoke.
· Cut out or limit alcohol.
If you know someone who would benefit from this information, please share this with her.

Be well,
