Menopause at 25?
Jersey City
June 21, 2024
Hi there!
A couple of weeks ago I went to the Survive & Thrive event sponsored by HerMD and Let’s Talk Women’s Health. The theme was survivorship, sex, and menopause. I wish you could have been there. It was great. Since you weren’t there, I’m going to share some takeaways.
You know that menopause begins with perimenopause and usually starts when you’re between 45 and 50. But what if you’re 23 or 25 and suddenly you’re in menopause? It’s traumatic to say the least. Your friends are starting careers and families and you’re having hot flashes and night sweats. Terrible!
Premature menopause is when a woman goes into menopause for no reason. This happens to 1% of women under the age of 40. No one knows why.
Then there is treatment induced menopause which can abruptly cause a young woman to go into menopause. This can be caused by surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.
In both cases, a woman is suddenly thrown into menopause The symptoms are immediate and severe.
As you can imagine, this affects her mental and emotional health as much as her physical health.
It’s great that menopause is becoming mainstream. There are loads of books, podcasts and magazines dedicated to menopause. In the rush to make menopause mainstream let’s remember to include all women, especially the young women who really need support.
If you know a young woman who needs is struggling with finding support, show her some love and then refer her to The North American Menopause Society or HerMD.
I am always available to answer questions and share resources.
Be well,
Laura

What I’ve been up to…
· I’ve been exploring house plants and have discovered some weird and wonderful plants. I now own a crocodile fern and a rattlesnake plant and I’m not even a fan of reptiles! Two favorite plant stores are Plantd and Rudo.
· Got a subscription to the Metropolitan Museum. No more excuses for missing exhibits!
· I’m back at Welcome Home helping adult refugees learn English. Very rewarding.
