Hair and Nails and More

Hi There!
One of my friends, who is an actress was asked to do a commercial for Rogaine. She refused.
Hair loss is a big deal, especially for women, but it happens. Although it can happen anytime, it’s common in menopause. Blame it on the drop in estrogen.
Luxurious locks, glowing skin and strong nails are not just a sign of beauty, they’re also a sign of good health.
Many women take Biotin when their hair starts thinning or falling out. And it helps.
If you’re wondering what Biotin is, let me explain. Biotin is vitamin B7. It’s sometimes called vitamin H. It’s water soluble which means that your body absorbs what it needs and the rest you pee out. This is good because you can’t take too much of it. The recommended dosage is 30 micrograms; however, you can take up to 100 according to the Mayo Clinic.
Although its main function is to metabolize fats and proteins, Biotin seems to help keep hair, skin and nails healthy.
You know I believe in getting nutrients from food first and then from supplements. That goes for Biotin too. Here are foods to include in your diet to boost the Biotin in your diet.
Amount per Serving
· Beef liver, cooked (3 ounces) 30.8 micrograms
· Egg, whole cooked 10.0
· Salmon, pink canned in water 5.0
· Pork chop, cooked 3 ounces 3.8
· Hamburger patty, cooked 3 ounces 3.8
· Sunflower seeds roasted ¼ cup 2.6
· Sweet potato, cooked ½ cup 2.4
You can always choose to take a supplement in addition to adding Biotin rich foods to your diet.
The only thing to be aware of (and this pertains only to supplements), is to stop taking them if you are having blood work done. You don’t want it to interfere with your test results. If you are having blood tests for thyroid function, stop taking Biotin for a period of time because it can influence the results. Putting it on pause for 1 week should be sufficient.
Be well,
Laura

· Is anyone else as excited as I am about the Olympics? I love seeing all that hard work and talent in one place. I can’t decide which sport I like the best. The women runners are all amazing. What do you think? Do you have a favorite sport?
· Have you heard of Vivian Mair? Not only was she a nanny for 40 years, but she was also an amazing photographer. Unfortunately, no one knew about her great talent until after she died. There is an exhibit of her work at Fotografiska until Sep 29th. Very sad. I loved this exhibit and can’t recommend it enough. Don’t miss it!
· As you know, I hate food waste and have been volunteering with City Harvest for several years. I just heard that Whole Foods is doing something to combat food waste. Yeah! More than 450 Whole Foods Market stores are now offering "surprise bags" of surplus food on the Too Good To Go app. Here’s the link to learn more about it.
