Tips to Beat the Heat

Jersey City

July 19, 2024

Hi there!

My birthday may be in July but I’m no summer baby. I do not like the heat! It zaps my energy and makes me very cranky.

This unrelenting heat wave is crazy! But life goes on. And the weather is the weather, which is to say, it is what it is.

I refuse to spend the summer napping, which I could easily do. Instead, I’ve decided to use some of the strategies that I suggest to my clients who suffer from hot flashes. Did you know that 80% of women in perimenopause suffer from hot flashes? A hot flash is like a personal heat wave. Ugh!

Right now, I’m sitting at my computer and I’m wearing a neck fan. I have cool air blowing up into my hair and face and I’m already feeling better. It’s battery operated and I charge it every night just like I charge my cell phone. It looks like I have earphones hanging around my neck. So cool – literally.

I’m also drinking a large glass of cool lemonade (unsweetened) which I’m alternating with water. It’s super important to stay hydrated in the heat. And if you’re having hot flashes or are just feeling hot, remember that water regulates body temperature so drink lots of water.

Don’t eat spicey foods and go for non-alcoholic drinks. Both spice and alcohol raise your body temperature. I gave you a recipe for a spicey margarita. If you missed it, click the link. It’s really good.

Here’s a little list of items that may help you survive hot flashes, night sweats and heat waves. Let me know if you’ve tried any of these and how you like them. Also, I’m always looking for ways to stay cool so if you have a favorite hack, reply to this email and I’ll share it.

Stay cool and safe in this weather. In February, will we look longingly back on these days as we bundle up in layers to keep warm? I don’t think so😊

Be well,

Laura

And more...

This is where I add things I’ve read or seen that I found interesting and hopefully you will too. It’s been too hot to do much so I’ve been spending lots of time catching up with old friends by phone. How have you been spending these hot and hazy days of summer?

· Summer is berry season. Berries taste so good and are good for you but did you know that there’s a berry that is banned in the US? Most of us have never even tasted it. What a shame!

· Happy birthday to the Ceasar Salad which turns 100ths summer. Celebrate by making it. Here’s a good Ceasar Salad recipe from the Minimiist Baker. I’m making it for sure!

· We’re not the only ones dealing with oppressive heat. Think about people living in India. They’re using allow tech way to keep cool. What do you think?
